After Two Weeks, the 20 Most Popular Profiles on Google+

Image representing Google as depicted in Crunc...Image via CrunchBaseGoogle+, the new social network from Google has been live for two weeks now. The site won't be opened to the public until the end of July, at which point Google will rebrand some of its other products to more closely integrate all of its services, but tens of thousands have found their way in through email invitations from the search giant and select users.

Using this invite-only system, Google engineers can closely monitor usage of the service, spot and fix bugs and even put things in lockdown if need be. At one point last week, Google stopped sending invites to new users because demand was just too high.

Now that the floodgates have opened back up, new users are rushing to the service every minute. And then what? There isn't anything to do on Google+, which has been discussed as a potential Facebook killer, unless you have friends and followers. It's only natural that some of the earliest users -- technology personalities and bloggers, mostly -- have quickly amassed huge audiences. I wrote last week that Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg was the most popular user on Google+ with more than 21,000 followers. Seven days later, that number has grown to more than 110,000, and he remains in the top spot.

But who else is popular on the service? We've pulled the number of friends and followers (as of Sunday evening) for the top 20 users as well as any information they may have entered in Google+'s short "introduction" field. All of this data was provided by SocialStatistics.com, a website created by Boris Veldhuijzen van Zanten, a co-founder of Twitter Counter. It is updated daily.

SEO Basics - Three Simple Steps

Webmaster and website plus graphics, search en...Image via WikipediaSearch engine optimization is important when it comes to making a site visible on the web. If you wish for your content and products to be noticed without having to break the bank on advertising, you will need to learn SEO strategies. The entire process is quite simple, although many webmasters would like you to think otherwise because they want your money. They don't want you to know that you could easily improve the rankings of your blog across the web with understandable SEO techniques. With the right marketing campaign, your website could have high rankings on search engines, receive a better pagerank and get a huge amount of targeted web surfers.

There are a few main steps you should include in your SEO blueprint. Each step is crucial to the overall success of your internet marketing plan. Without one step, the other has the possibility to not reach the results you desire. You want your website to obtain authority status and hard work will prove successful. Keep in mind, you will have competition no matter which niche you go with. Your competitors are one step ahead of you by taking the necessary steps to gain high search engine placements and they are reaping all the benefits.

Step 1. Long-tail Keyword Research

Picking keywords for your site is highly important in today's internet age. In past days, it was not really a concern because you did not see very many sites that were trying to outrank one another. However, today there are lots of new sites being created all the time. Many of these sites are competing for highly searched terms that are just about impossible to rank for. What many site developers don't understand is that there are plenty of long-tail terms that are much easier to rank for. The webmasters who already gained this info have researched search queries to find the long-tail keywords which have a huge search volume, but a small amount of competition. When you have found a few easy ranking keywords, you should include them in your website content and backlinks you build off-site.

Step 2. On-Page Optimization

Optimizing the written material found on your site is something every webmaster should do if they are serious about their rankings. It is the single most important factor in improving your websites visibility on search engines. You could potentially skip steps 1 and 3 and still find your website performing great on search engines by writing unique, engaging content that gains the attention of users. Web searchers type queries into a search form and use specific keyword strings. If your website used that exact string and no other site has, your site has the likelihood of showing up in search results for that query. Optimizing your content involves building content that is in your own words and not copying other people's hard work. Copying other website's articles is considered plagiarism and many websites frown upon it. Write your content naturally and place your primary keywords in paragraphs, meta tags and heading tags.

Step 3. Off-site Optimization

Optimizing off-site content by building backlinks from well-known websites will help boost steps 1 and 2. When your site is linked to from other sites that a search engine named an authority, your site gets noticed. When spiders find more than one site that link to your website, search engines think your content is valuable and they re-evaluate your in search result listings. The more backlinks you create, the more likely your sites chances are of also being considered an authority on the web. The search engines weigh factors such as the pagerank, anchor text of backlinks, outbound links and more. To gain better rankings easily, place your main keywords in backlink anchor text. Submit your site to various internet properties every day and use a backlinks checker to maintain your progress.

Google Launches eBooks To Rival Amazon

In a bid to rival Amazon, Google has today launched its new eBooks. eBooks is an internet book store and claims to make 3 million books available to readers.

And it seems that Google has the backing of the reading community. With four thousand publishers on board including, Simon & Schuster, Random House and Penguin Group, all allowing Google to carry many of their recently released books. This new development is set to challenge Amazon as a source of electronic books.

The Google store, currently only available in the US allows consumers to buy books and read them on any machine with a Web browser. Free applications are also available and can be installed on Apple Inc.’s iPad and iPhone, as well as other devices powered by Google’s own mobile operating system, Android.

However, Google's eBooks can't be loaded on to the Kindle, Amazon's electronic reader.

Google’s new venture is set to generate nearly $1 billion in US sales this year and climb to $1.7 billion by 2012 as more people buy electronic readers and computer tablets such as the iPad, according to Forrester Research.

The research group expects a total of 15 million e-readers and tablets to have been sold in the U.S. by the end of the year.

Google claims to be offering the broadest selection of digital titles in the world with the new eBooks, and has plans to expand the inventory if the necessary copyright clearances can be gained.

The company, based in Mountain View, California, believes it eventually will be able to make electronic copies of the estimated 130 million books in the world.

It's also planning to start selling books outside the U.S. next year.
