What is first aid?

What is first aid?

When a person gets entangled in a sudden or unexpected accident, or becomes unconscious, or is afflicted by illnesses such as heart attack, which could be fatal, and if crucial medical help is delayed, the first medical attention rendered to him, to save his life, would be termed as first aid.

Even doctors might find it a wee-bit difficult to diagnose a patient, during emergency, without the help of their medical instruments. Similarly, a person doling out first aid might find it difficult to assess the cause for a person - fainting or becoming unconscious.

Hence, the prime duty of the person who is administering first aid is to remove things that could damage the life of the patient on hand, and must enable a process to keep him alive. The need for a knowledge of the disease or source of disease/ illness plays only a secondary role.

When a person is caught in an accident or is endangered, it is better to enquire for details from those in the vicinity. The details of the patient's name, age and address would come in handy.

It is imperative that the person administering first aid, in no way aggravates the situation also the person must protect his own self too. the onlookers could be requested to inform specification of medical aid required . the person delivering first aid must be well versed with the ways of conduction himself, whether it is a fire accident or an accident at a busy road with traffic congestion.

Finally, one must never forget the fact that one is rendering only first aid and must concede graciously to the intervention of an experienced expert.
