Cash-for-vote: Saxena claims Amar link, police ‘trace’ key money trail

Altered colors as per latest political scenario.Image via WikipediaNew Delhi The first person to be arrested in the cash-for-vote scam, Sanjeev Saxena, was introduced to the three BJP MPs — who said they had been offered money to abstain from voting in a trust motion in Parliament — as the secretary of former Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh.
Saxena (50) even made the MPs talk to Singh on his mobile phone on July 22, 2008 — the day the scam rocked Parliament, police told a Delhi court on Monday.

Police have sought Saxena’s remand for three days. The Crime Branch said he had destroyed this mobile phone.

The Delhi Police said their next job was to trail the Rs 1 crore that allegedly changed hands and made its way to Parliament. They said they had traced a large amount of the money to Mysore, Dehradun, Gurgaon and Lucknow.

The police said they had decided to arrest Saxena on the statements of now ex-BJP MPs Mahavir Singh Bhagora and Fagan Singh Kulaste, who named him as the person who had offered them money to abstain from voting during the trust motion moved by the UPA-I government.

Another accused in the case, who drove Saxena with the bag of cash to the house of the third MP, Ashok Argal, is absconding. Police said this man, known only as Sanjay, was Amar Singh’s driver.

It was at Argal’s house that a sting operation was conducted by a private news channel, recording the money transfer. A forensic examination found the DVD’s contents to be genuine.

“After we received the forensic report, we decided to question Bhagora and Kulaste and sent teams to Udaipur and Bhopal. Both of them named Saxena as the person who came with the bag containing the money. It was on their statement that we decided to arrest Saxena. He is not cooperating and is changing statements regularly,” said a senior police officer.

Police sources said they had not been able to question Amar Singh and Argal. “As they are sitting MPs, we have to seek permission to question them. We sent the request 15 days ago and have not received the reply yet,” said a senior police officer.

A case under the Prevention of Corruption Act had been registered after Argal, Kulaste and Bhagora had barged into the Lok Sabha carrying Rs 1 crore currency notes alleging they were paid to abstain from voting.

A seven-member Parliamentary Committee had been constituted to probe the allegations. It had asked the Delhi Police to investigate the role of Saxena, Suhail Hindustani and Sudheendra Kulkarni.
