Ahmedabad police suspect Indian Mujahideen hand in Mumbai serial blasts

The River Sabarmati in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, IndiaImage via WikipediaAhmedabad police- the first to bust various modules of Indian Mujahideen (IM)- are not ready to accept any other theory in connection with the bomb blasts in Mumbai on Wednesday. The cops believe it to be the handiwork of middle rung IM operatives who are still on the run from Gujarat police.

The modus operandi in the recent bomb blasts matches those of Jaipur, Bangalore and Ahmedabad serial blasts of 2008.

Even though the Detection of Crime Branch (DCB), Ahmedabad city arrested 47 of the accused in the blasts, most of them were from lower rungs of the terror outfit and were only involved in the execution of the plan or planting of the bombs.

Talking to DNA, the in-charge director general of police, Chitranjan Singh said, "Despite busting the IM module, we know there are many accused, who are still on the run and we are hunting for them."

Singh further said that, the top level members of IM is in Pakistan, but the middle rung operatives are still in India and they execute such blasts. "The middle level operatives are the 'hardcore' terrorists and are always on the move," he said.

Another police source familiar with the Ahmedabad serial blasts investigation said the possibility of any other terror outfit conducting such blasts is miniscule.

"The blast is clearly the work of IM," he said.

The Ahmedabad police suspect that Abdul Subbhan Qureshi alias Tauqeer is one of the key middle level IM operatives from India, who could be behind the recent Mumbai blasts.

However, the Gujarat police have so far not came across any leads which indicate the involvement of IM operatives lodged in Sabarmati prison.

The city commissioner of police, Sudhir Sinha said that the investigation by the Gujarat police has so far revealed that the IM has a strong network and local support in Hyderabad, Madhya Pradesh, Kerala and Kolkata.

The three bomb blasts in Mumbai on Wednesday evening killed 21 people and left over 130 injured.
